Campus Life: Student Involvement at Laurel Hill School

Student Government

At Laurel Hill School, we believe in fostering leadership and responsibility from a young age. Our Student Government provides Kindergarten through 5th-grade students with the opportunity to take responsibility for the multiple needs of the entire student body. Each year, officers are elected to work under the guidance of a faculty mentor, ensuring that students' voices are heard and their ideas are implemented. Town Meetings are held with the entire student body, allowing for open discussion and collaborative decision-making.

Community Service

Community service is a cornerstone of student life at Laurel Hill. Our students volunteer to help other students and teachers, creating a supportive and caring school environment. Boys and girls may tutor younger students, assist with instruction across the school, or initiate projects that benefit the entire student body. These activities not only help those in need but also teach our students the value of empathy, compassion, and active citizenship.

Social Action Projects

Laurel Hill students are encouraged to organize and participate in social action projects that help local, national, and global communities. By working with outreach organizations, our students learn about and contribute to relieving some of the most pressing social needs. Classroom curricula are expanded to supplement these projects, with teachers presenting guided lessons and activities about the history and social life of the people we assist, as well as case studies of individuals facing challenging conditions.

Micro-Society

Our Micro-Society program is a student-run town in miniature, complete with everything from a bank to a marketplace to a mediation center. There is even an IRS! This realistic setting provides students with hands-on experience in learning about commerce and institutions, practicing citizenship skills, and resolving everyday problems. It’s an engaging way for students to understand the complexities of adult life and develop practical skills.

Past Community and Social Action Projects

Laurel Hill students have a proud history of supporting various community service and social action projects, including:

  • Supporting the Heifer Project by donating livestock and farming education to needy families.

  • Raising funds to assist families affected by the 2001 earthquakes in El Salvador and India.

  • Constructing a schoolhouse in a rural village in Madagascar and supporting a teacher’s salary for a year.

  • Providing lunches for one hundred children in Ethiopia every day for a year.

  • Supporting clandestine home schools for girls in pre-9/11 Afghanistan.

  • Purchasing the freedom of chattel slaves in Mauritania.

  • Supporting local food pantries, hospitals, and hospice.

  • Raising funds for various 9/11 charities and numerous local and national healthcare initiatives.

  • Responding to emergencies due to natural disasters.

  • Providing clean water filtration systems to villages in Cambodia.
